BEFORE THE WEDDING, THERE’s THE BRIDAL SHOWER
Before the speeches, the first dance and the walk down the aisle, there is another moment worth celebrating.
A room filled with the people closest to you. Stories shared over lunch. Gifts wrapped with care. Glasses raised to what’s still to come.
The bridal shower has become a beloved part of the wedding journey, but the tradition itself has been around for much longer than you might think.
WHERE DID THE BRIDAL SHOWER COME FROM?
The story begins centuries ago.
One of the traditions often linked to the modern bridal shower dates back to 16th-century Holland, where a wealthy young woman reportedly fell in love with a poorer miller. Her father refused to provide her dowry, so her friends came together to give her the household goods she would need to begin her new life.
While the details of this story have become part of bridal shower folklore, the broader tradition of friends and family helping a bride prepare for marriage has appeared in different forms across cultures and generations.
Over time, these customs evolved.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the bridal shower had become more recognisable as a social gathering, particularly in North America. What began as practical support gradually became something more celebratory – a chance for the bride’s closest people to gather before the wedding.
And that part hasn’t really changed.
FROM PRACTICAL TO PERSONAL
Today, bridal showers aren’t necessarily about preparing a home or collecting household essentials.
They’re about the people.
The mother who has been there from the beginning. The friends who have heard every detail of the engagement. The bridesmaids who will be beside you on the wedding day.
It’s a chance to bring everyone together before the celebrations really begin.
And perhaps that’s why the tradition has lasted.
Because while weddings celebrate the beginning of a marriage, a bridal shower celebrates the people who have helped you get there.
A MODERN BRIDAL SHOWER
The modern bridal shower can look however you want it to.
A long lunch overlooking the city. An afternoon of cocktails and conversation. Something beautifully styled, something completely relaxed, or simply a table filled with the people you love most.
The traditions may have changed, but the reason for gathering hasn’t.
Good people. A reason to celebrate. And one more beautiful moment before the big day.
