Shopping for your wedding dress

So, you recently said yes to your forever…. Now the real fun begins!

Planning a wedding can be pretty overwhelming. There is so much to consider! What style of wedding do I want? What colour palettes should I select? Where do I want to get married? Where do you even begin…

Traditionally there are two things that a bride starts with:

  1. Securing your dream wedding venue and
  2. The DRESS

These are the two things that often take the longest to select and also require a lengthier lead time. Let’s start with the dress, because let’s face it, this is the most important dress you will probably ever wear and it’s probably the most exciting part of planning a wedding. Most brides already have a picture in their head of the type of wedding dress that they want. It’s probably something you have been day dreaming about for a very long time. If not, Pinterest is a great place to start! Once you know the style, colour and the budget you are working with, you are able to make an informed decision.

Even then, wedding dress shopping is like learning a new language. There are so many terms that you might be hearing for the first time and they are important to understand. The biggest decision you need to make is what type of dress would you like? Are you shopping off-the rack, bespoke or couture? There are pros and cons to each type of wedding dress. To help you wrap your head around these selections, we have provided all the information you need to start your wedding dress shopping journey!

Made to order wedding dresses:

This is probably one of the most popular selections for brides to be. Made to order wedding dresses give you the opportunity to try on different styles and select the dress of your dreams in your chosen bridal store using the samples available. A brand-new dress free of blemishes etc. that can often occur when multiple people try on the samples, is then made once you have made your selection. Made to order dresses are made in traditional sizing so even this choice will require some alterations to make sure the dress fits your body perfectly.

Ready to wear or off the rack:

Similar to above, this dress is found on the rack in bridal stores. You can try on and select the dress that you like the most although once you make your selection, you will be taking the dress that you have tried on home with you. Ready to wear is often less expensive than any of the other dress shopping options, as you are buying the dress as is.  Many bridal shops also have sample sales, where they resell the dresses used by models for their photo shoots. It is a great option if you have a smaller budget. It also helps with short lead weddings because having a dress made to order can take up to eight months!

The cons: it isn’t a completely unique style, meaning other brides may also have the same dress for their wedding day. If this is not a concern then off the rack is a great option!

Bespoke wedding dresses:

Bespoke is often a term used to describe a dress that allows for some modifications. Traditionally you would have a base that you are working with, for example, if you have found a dress that you really love, but would like a lower back or sleeves added, these alterations can be made. It’s not as expensive as a couture wedding dress and still gives you the flexibility to create a dress that is more your style.

Couture wedding dresses:

This is the dress of all dresses. The dress that is made perfectly for you.

A couture dress is made to your measurements and is a bespoke design created based on the images, sketches and preferences that you have provided the dress maker. It means that you will have a completely unique dress. Although more expensive than the other options, we often hear brides say they have no regrets when selecting this option because it is completely them. This dress can take up to a year to produce from design to production, although occasionally dress makers are able to create rush orders. If this is the dress of your dreams, make sure you start imagining and creating as early as possible.

Which ever selection you make, remember that this day is all about you and your partner. So, it doesn’t matter what the price tag says or the opinions of others, just make sure it’s something that you are truly happy with. Enjoy the process of selecting your wedding dress, after all you may only do this once in your life. Savor these precious moments, because one day you will look back on this day as the most magical day of your life.

Happy shopping!
